that someone is watching
"...the single assumption which makes our existence viable - that someone is watching."
The Player, from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard
Writing is thinking. It is the special kind of thinking you do when you aim to present your thoughts. When excellent, it transfixes and delights the reader. Hard things seem easy. Fantasy seems real. Men give up their very beliefs to great writing. The truism holds: The pen is mightier than the sword.
It is fashionable to say that writing is beyond review, that it is meaningless to criticize today's letters. This is simply not true. Anyone who writes in a meaningful way is read, and readers have at least as much liberty as writers. Writing, that is to say thinking, must bear the weight of criticism. This is especially true with web writing, which often relies on unedited sources and trends toward a personal outlook even in serious work.
This blog is for writing and criticism. News, essays, fiction, sports, business, entertainment-- everything is on the table.
